Chapter 02

The 5 Safety Rules

Follow these rules consistently. They protect you from costly mistakes.

1. Buy During Bonus Promotions

Never buy miles at full price. Wait for 50-100% bonus promotions. These happen regularly throughout the year, especially during Q4 (October-December). A 100% bonus means you get double the miles for the same price.

ScenarioWhat you payWhat you get
Base price$1,40050,000 miles
With 100% bonus$1,400100,000 miles
Result: 50,000 miles at no additional cost.

2. Do the Math First

Always calculate the total cost (miles purchase + taxes) vs. the cash business class fare. Aim for at least 40% savings to make it worthwhile. Factor in the economy fare too to see your premium.

Calculate:

  1. Cost to buy miles during promotion
  2. Award taxes and fees
  3. Total cost (miles + taxes)
  4. Business class cash fare
  5. Your savings percentage

3. Check Space Before Booking (When Ready)

When you're ready to redeem, verify award space is available for your desired route and dates before booking. Use AwardBrain to search across 25+ programs at once. If you're stocking up during bonuses, you can search later when you're ready to travel.

ApproachWhat it looks like
GoodStock up during a 100% bonus in November. Search for flights in January when you're ready to book spring/summer travel.
BadBuy miles at full price without a promotion, then find out there's no availability for your exact dates.

4. Book Soon After Purchasing (For Immediate Trips)

If you're buying miles for an immediate trip (within days or weeks), book as soon as miles post to your account. Award space can disappear quickly, especially on popular routes. For strategic stocking up, this doesn't apply — you'll book when you're ready to travel.

Typical timeline:

  • Miles usually post within 24-48 hours
  • Sometimes instant, sometimes up to 5 days
  • Don't wait weeks — space can vanish
  • Have backup dates ready

5. Stay Within Purchase Limits

Each program has annual purchase limits. Respect them. Trying to circumvent limits can get your account frozen. Plan your purchases strategically across the year.

ProgramAnnual purchase limit
AeroplanNo annual limit
Flying BlueNo annual limit
Qatar Avios200,000 per year

Why these rules matter

These aren't suggestions — they're the foundation of smart mile buying. Break these rules and you'll either lose money or end up with miles you can't use. Follow them and you'll consistently get 60-80% off business class flights.
